One-minute reading race

How many words a minute can your child read out loud?

Your child reads the passage out loud for 60 seconds while you tap along. We turn that into words correct per minute and compare it to the national U.S. grade-level standards teachers use.

Set up the race

How it works

  1. Your child reads the passage out loud, starting at the top.
  2. With “Listen and count for me” on, the microphone follows along and highlights each word they read correctly — no tapping needed.
  3. Skipped or misread words are counted automatically as “Oops”.
  4. You can still tap a word or the buttons to correct the count at any time.
  5. At 60 seconds the race stops and we show the score.

National standard for 3rd grade

Average reader: 112 words correct per minute. Strong reader: 137. Needs support: below 87.
